Lite-On USA announces a new range of thermally protected varistor technology

Littelfuse Corporation, a manufacturer of technology for circuit protection, power control and sensing, introduces the LST varistor family and announces a new family of thermally protected varistor technology.

This new varistor is built with Littelfuse's proprietary Thermally Protective Varistor Technology (TMOV) developed to combine a built-in thermal disconnect function with arc shielding. This combination provides additional robust protection against catastrophic failure and fire hazards, even under extreme conditions of abnormal overvoltage conditions or end-of-life of the varistor.

It is designed for use in Class 1 and Class 2 surge protection devices (SPDs) in markets and applications including

Residential, commercial and industrial buildings

Uninterruptible power supplies (UPS)

Industrial motor control

Renewable energy

HVAC systems

"LST varistors offer several advantages over other technologies on the market," said Boris Golubovic, vice president of marketing and strategy at Littelfuse. "By adding LST to your new design, you will not only benefit from its wide operating voltage range, high inrush current rating and complementary micro-switching options, your SPD will also be more robust to meet the protection needs of your customers' applications."

The LST varistor range offers the following key benefits.

Helps to meet UL1449 listed Type 1 or Type 2 standards by combining 200 kA SCCR, 20 kA In, UL1449 Type 4 approved component assemblies.

Flexibility of using 50 kA and 75 kA Imax rated devices with the same footprint on the PCB.

Further options for designing remote indication/monitoring of SPD products or systems via mechanically triggered AC and DC rated microswitches (normally open/closed, pin length, 2-pin/3-pin/no pin).

The visual tab option clears the LST operating status indication and notifies service technicians and maintenance engineers to replace the LST at end of life (EOL) in order to continue to provide *optimal* surge protection for the end product.

Wide operating voltage range: up to 690 Vac for the 50 kA version and up to 550 Vac for the 75 kA version.
